The Emotional Fluency Project advocates for responsible and ethical approaches to working with emotion in theatre training and performance, offering research, presentations, and Emotional Fluency Training for Actors workshops.
Emotional Fluency Training for Actors (EFTA) Workshops provide Actors, Directors, Coaches, and Educators with a comprehensive, somatic, consent-based, and trauma-informed approach to understanding and working with emotion in theatre practice. Using the BOS Emotional Effector Patterns (EEP) system, participants learn to enter, exit, and regulate emotions with control and agency, enhancing their capacity to stimulate and manage emotions safely and effectively in the acting process. EFTA workshops are adaptable to various experience levels and tailored to meet the needs of diverse groups.
EFTA participants consistently report discovering:
"It feels like the safest and most repeatable form of emotional work I have ever encountered as an actor. I encourage anyone working as an expressive artist to attend at least one of these workshops."
Phillip Geller, Theatre Artist/Director/Educator
"Being able to reach intense emotional states at the drop of a hat is a highly sought-after skill for many performers, and too often comes with a price. Working with the Emotional Effector patterns not only makes me feel safe and in control of my emotional work, but also allows me to be consistent and feel competent as a worker in my field."
Margaret Hild, Actor/Voice Coach
"This workshop was inspirational. I discovered a technique that enabled me to access and modulate emotion safely. The method is easy to use and fun to explore. Discover the creative joy that arises from allowing your emotional body to free your impulses, heighten your senses and improve your communication. The emotional effector patterns will empower you as an actor and increase your agency in the rehearsal process."
Jo Christensen, Actor/Director/Teacher
"This seems to be a method that supports actors’ mental health by not having to rely on delving into painful personal memories. It also supports actors’ mental and physical well-being by providing a simple, effective method to clear emotion and accompanying tension from the body."
Heather Ondersma, Intimacy Coordinator/Director
"Through the practice of this technique I learned how my body processes emotion from a different point of view and with that came empowerment. My body is no longer the "victim" of emotions, it is the vessel in which I allow them to live freely, without fear."
Cora Kennedy, Actor
"Emotional Effector Patterns were shockingly effective. They feel like recipes, if you know how to use the recipe, anyone can produce the desired outcome."
Carol-ann Bohrn, Dancer/Actor
"Using emotional effector patterns was definitely a tool I was missing - both as an actor and a coach. It's a great way to connect to powerful emotions without having to dredge up trauma from your past. I will definitely be pursuing this work further."
Mark Ingram, Actor/Director/Educator
"The Emotional body method gives you access to a safe inexhaustible emotional range."
Travis Fawcett, Actor
"As a physical actor, I can't imagine finding a more beneficial tool for my craft. It's given me an in-depth, embodied understanding of emotional states that has helped me reach a kind of truth and vulnerability in my work that I had felt before only on rare, special occasions."
Heidi Damayo, Actor/Director/Writer
"This method has changed my approach to acting and breaking down scripts. All action starts from an emotional place. To drop into that emotional place quickly and cleanly and to be able to dial its intensity up or down helps me to find the characters actions more succinctly. Having an emotional practice that I can do regularly at home, allows me to have my emotions 'on tap' when I need them. My emotions are no longer a mystery that control me, but rather, I can acknowledge, recognize and have control over them."
